Growing advice

Growing haskaps through an Australian summer.

Help cool-climate haskaps thrive through warm Australian weather with moisture, mulch and thoughtful siting.

Plan for heat when you choose the site.

Haskaps are celebrated for cold hardiness, but Australian success also depends on summer conditions. Cooler districts, reliable irrigation and protection from the harshest afternoon heat give new plants a more comfortable start.

Keep the root zone comfortably moist.

Many haskap roots sit close to the surface. Check moisture beneath the mulch and water deeply enough to reach the active root zone. The aim is steady moisture without leaving plants waterlogged.

Use mulch as summer insulation.

An organic mulch layer can shade the soil, slow evaporation and soften temperature swings. Keep it clear of the stems and renew it as it breaks down.

Balance water with drainage.

On heavy or wet soil, raised or mounded planting can help excess water move away. In containers, use a free-draining mix and remember that pots can dry and heat quickly.

Watch, adjust and record.

Leaf colour, new growth and soil moisture tell you more than a fixed timetable. Note how each selection responds to heat, wind and watering, then adjust the next season’s care.
